Grange Moor Primary School – statement on British Values
The DfE states that schools need “to create and reinforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
At Grange Moor these are reinforced in the following ways:
Democracy
Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. We have a democratically elected school council which meets regularly to discuss matters of school improvement and the raising of funds for projects as decided by consultations with other pupils. Children vote at the end of each term for a Class Champion – a pupil who has been recognised for significant contributions to class and school life. Children are also regularly asked their opinions in school assemblies and complete various surveys throughout the year.
The Rule of Law
Rules, or more specifically expectations, are constantly and consistently referred to and reinforced during the school day. When these are not adhered to it is made quite clear that a child’s actions are going against our whole school expectations. Pupils are taught that every action has a consequence. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service serve to reinforce the message.
Individual Liberty
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our assemblies and E-Safety and PSHE lessons.
Mutual respect
We pride ourselves on being a family school that promotes family values. We (pupils, parents, staff) are a close knit community where mutual respect is at the core of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others.
Tolerance
Grange Moor is not a culturally diverse village and we are acutely aware of our responsibility in promoting diversity (and tolerance of) with pupils. Children learn stories from different faiths and study different celebrations such as Eid and Diwali. The Kirklees Agreed RE Syllabus supports the children’s understanding of different faiths and cultures and we have an Arts and Culture Week every term that studies a particular country or continent. We have links with both a junior school and an infant school in Dewsbury that are culturally diverse and children take part in reciprocal visits.
At Grange Moor Primary School we actively challenge anyone that expresses opinions contrary to fundamental British Values including extremist views.
